Been a while...

It's been a while since I've updated here... but things are moving along. Classes are back in session, so I'm swamped with work from that. I've got several commissions going on right now, from some very patient buyers who have been great and have waited for some time while I took care of some personal things going on in my life... but I'm always open for more commissions, especially now that I'm finally starting to get things back under control. So if you know anyone (or perhaps, even yourself) that would like a custom made figure, don't hesitate to contact me :)

I can't believe how long it's been since I've updated this thing... but I'm back and I'll be updating more often (I hope)... although I've said that before, lol. BUT I really mean it this time, as I'm back to working for myself and making figures for my fans and customers...

School sucks...

You know that saying "If it wasn't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all"?? That seems to be my motto for this semester at school...

I originally ordered a case of 10 sheets of 30"x40" corrugated cardboard sheets before my classes began, as it was on the supplies list for one class. A few weeks back, I asked about the 4'x8' sheets of corrugated that were being used for this chair design project (that were also on the supply list), and that I couldn't find them. I was told that I could use any size boards. So I ordered more of the 30"x40", thinking that the 10 sheets already on the list were for something else. Well, they weren't, and they were put there as an alternative to the 4'x8' sheets, but nothing was said to that effect. so now I had a ton of corrugated cardboard sheets.

Today, I started doing my cutting and assembling of my chair design, only to discover that my original design couldn't be accomplished with the smaller 30"x40" corrugated sheets that I had. So I had to modify the design. After cutting several of my sheets with my new modified design, I came to the realization that my seat was only about 14" off the floor... how I didn't realize it earlier is beyond me, but I digress...

So I set about modifying my design yet again. Not an issue, as I have all this extra corrugated board to use. I finished off the first box, the original 10 sheets that I ordered before class, having cut most of them up during my first two failed design tries. So I grabbed the second box that I ordered, which I didn't open when it arrived because I knew what it was.

Well, I opened that box, and... the sheets are warped. ALL of them. So now, I have to either a) find a place tomorrow that has corrugated cardboard sheets within traveling distance, as ordering more online is not really an option or b) just try to straighten these as best as possible and create my design the best I can.Ugh, I can't wait till this semester is over.

Wow, I can't believe that my last update was talking about how the summer semester was about to start... and now summer is over (I did OK, got one "A" and one "B" in my classes) and the fall semester has already started! I have two more classes this semester that will be a challenge, and I hope I'm up for it. We'll have to wait and see I guess.

Wow, I can't believe how long it's been since I've posted an update here. Anyway... on to better news :'(

I finally did something that I have been talking about and thinking about doing for the past several years - I'm going back to school :) Kinda.

I signed up to take some classes at the Academy of Art Institute Online. The online courses offer me the flexibility to keep my full time job without having to worry about making it to class on time on a regular basis... plus, the only schools around here that even offer the degree I want (Industrial Design) are in NYC and that's a good amount of time for a commute.

So now I can come home after working a full day and sit in front of my computer for a few hours every night, yay! They are telling me that each course will require approximately 20 hours per week, and I have two courses that start on 6.21 - so I'm working a full 40 hour work week (42 hours, technically) and then 40 hours of class... not sure when I'm going to sleep. Or eat. Or watch TV. Or make toys. Or... you get it.

Wish me luck. I'm gonna need it.

Today is a very sad day, as I just came back from the vet where I had to put my best little buddy to sleep at the young age of 18 years old. Rest in Peace, Freddy, you will be missed dearly.

New Year, New Project - and a BIG one at that!

Happy New Year everybody!! I hope that everyone's New Year is a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous one! I've decided that I'm going to tackle one "BIG" project every year, starting this year, in my "spare" time when I'm not working my job or working on commissions. Yeah, I know, it's probably a stretch, but I think it will be cool.

Anyway, for my first year, I've decided to create a 1:18 scale Death Star modular playset.

STEP 1: THE PLAN

In my home office/collection room I have some large shelves by IKEA that currently house my collection of crappy Hasbro 12" figures. I've decided to get rid of one shelf worth of those and put this Death Star playset in that space. The shelf is 74 3/4" wide and has a height of 20 1/4" available to the bottom of the shelf above. It's also 10" deep, although I probably won't go all the way back with it. I want to make it maybe 6" - 7" in depth so I can leave room "behind the scenes" for me to put the lighting controls :D

I'm currently still in the planning stages, drawing up different outlines and blueprints, deciding which rooms to include, and trying to figure out exactly how many sections I'm going to have. I think I've narrowed it down to six separate but connectible sections.

The big issue I have is that in the middle of the shelf, on the wall behind it, I have a Hasbro SW cardboard display that I don't want to cover completely.

I want to make it modular, for ease of transporting and/or moving it around. I want to have six sections:

Section 1: computer control room
Section 2: detention block
Section 3: random Death Star room
Section 4: hallway
Section 5: Emperor Palpatine's Throne Room
Section 6: trash compactor (double height)

Sections 1, 2, and 3 will stack on top of each other on the left hand side. Section 4 hallway will attach to the bottom section and connect the right hand side, which will have section 5 sitting on top of section 6. It will be easier to understand once I've finalized my plans and show a pic of the blueprint, lol.

Section 1, 2, 3 and 5 will be 6.5" tall and 23" wide. Section 4 will be 6.5" tall and 28 3/4" wide. Section 6 will be 13" tall and 23" wide. I'm still drawing up the plans, but as soon as I get a finalized idea on the appearance I'll post a picture. I'm not completely sold on the room selections just yet, I'm still tinkering with it... except for the longer hallway and the trash compactor section, everything else is still up in the air.

I'm going to use this blog (along with a thread over at the Pro Customizers website/forum) to keep updates of my progress and WIP pics along the way. I hope you will enjoy seeing the updates and watching me build this massive diorama playset as much as I'll enjoy building it!

I'm working on updating my custom gallery with quite a few older (and some new) custom figures that I made. I plan on doing these updates over the next few days, so you're going to start seeing some serious figures showing up on the main custom page. I'm going to try and put them on the page in the order they were created, with the newest items being at the top of the page, so some of these figures will be added to the bottom of that page, since some of them are pretty old.

I've really started putting in some work on the new website that I'm creating. I'm starting to go through older folders on my hard drive and get all the old pictures of custom figures that I've created and sold off over the past few years. It's a long, arduous process, but I'm getting there.

So far I've added 3 figures - Clone Wars Commander Gree, Hoth/Snowspeeder Luke, and ARC Trooper Alpha. You can check them out at my website.

The Old Republic

So Lucasarts and Bioware have teamed up to create the next generation of MMO (massively multiplayer online) games. Sounds great right? Personally I can't understand why anyone would enjoy plunking down $50 - $60 for a game that they can't even play unless they want to plunk down another $15 - $20 per month forever! I mean, from a company standpoint I can see it... or at least I can see the dollar signs in Lucas' eyes. But as a gamer, what reason could there possible be that would make me happy to keep sending them money to play a game that I've already paid for?

AND I've been totally lacking in updating my blog. Well, no more! This is going to become my personal crusade (but not the Last Crusade) to keep everything up to date! I know that nobody reads this but me, but if you really wanted to keep up with what' going on, you could add me on twitter - same username, starwarsgeek - and that will let you know when a new update is published. Like, once every 6 months. NOT!
